Thoughts on Learning

 As I get older, things get clearer and my thinking is more direct. The process is highlighting some things for me as I organize teaching in these last years of my professional life. What's exciting is how relevant I find some of the premises I stumbled on early in the field of organizational development and the application of knowledge. Among some of those ideas were values of experiential learning and an awareness of the necessity of responsibility and accountability in the learning process. For executives and managers building tacit skills, problems must be real, there must be stakes up for grabs, and the attention needs to be on "the process". 

"Action Learning" is one of the most powerful strategies for executive and management development ever generated. It involves a consultant or outsider contracting with top authorities of a system an opportunity for 'learners' to tackle strategic issues of the greatest import, and to make progress on those very problems as part of their "learning". This is the core method deployed by Neil Carefoot and his associates at WHO in the "dual focus approach" projects he generated in a number of developing countries. With sabbaticals at least part-time from bureaucratic responsibilities, trainees were brought together as strong teams and chartered with authority from the top to conceptualize key national improvement opportunities, and to set about making progress. Results as I've observed them have always been strong. 

George Bolden, an executive coach of the UK was involved with Reginald Revans, often considered the "father of Action Learning". George was and is masterful at designing and implementing short intervention programs following Action Learning principles. He's been inventing applications of the approach for decades, and all around the world. Often his approach involves large search conferences and thus has many affinities to the famous GE workouts.
